Middle School - D Parker

1. How do your proposed strategies (Week 8 Step 6) meet the required standards as your Week 6 Step 4 stated?

The primary goals written in the Week 8, Step 6 proposal was written within the context of creating more independence for teachers to work with technology with students.  By establishing confidence in our teachers with technology, the teachers will feel more comfortable integrating technology.  This will reach the ISTE NETS for teachers to “facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity.”  They will also feel more comfortable with “modeling digital age work and learning.” (ISTE NETs, 2012)

Students will benefit by teachers being able to trouble shoot computers so that time is not wasted because the computers are down if a teacher can diagnose the problems with the computers.  Based on the survey performed at the beginning of this process, it was noted that teachers are frustrated when something they have planned doesn’t work and they must work on the fly.  By strengthening their computer knowledge, they will know how to better prepare their lessons with technology and how to not lose the class if something does go wrong because they know how to fix it.

2. Review the reading materials in Technology domain to propose using other standards which were not adopted by your studied school.  Explain why those new standards should be considered for your studied school.

ISTE-NETS 4: Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility.

This should be addressed more within our district standards.  These topics are addressed at the beginning of the school year but are not addressed again unless an issue arises.  These are primarily taught if a student has a technology course. This should be addressed with our teachers that do not teach technology so that they may refer to digital citizenship and responsibility each time research or computers are being used.

ISTE-NETS 5: Engage in professional growth and leadership.

This is lightly addressed in the campus plan but is not in a great deal of detail.  Teachers will feel more confident to share and implement technology is the training for digital use and resources are taught in small pockets through out the year.  When a teacher just attends training over the summer and then does not revisit the training, they tend to figure what they learned.  If teachers are in core or academic teams they could work together on a project that would be used throughout the campus. (ISTE NETs, 2012)

I feel the teachers have a lot to learn. We have a ways to go in teaching the teachers just what are NETS, how to implement them and assess their use. We also need to teach them trouble shooting.
Here is a great site to help teacher to get started on troubleshooting. This site shows research that shows the common troubleshooting for teachers.

I agree with your strategies to help teachers become more comfortable with computers. Most teachers don't have time to use computers, so they say, but the reality is that they are afraid to use them. Our students are so technology savy that all we "teachers" need to do is let them be creative. Do you have a system that works for you with helping your teachers use technology?

Rachel,
The website you posted is excellent. It hits quite a few of the needs of our teachers. I will definitely be sharing this with them. I have also thought about creating a blog for teachers to post questions that their fellow teachers can respond to with their solutions as well as the technology facilitator could respond to. I know one area our teachers would really like to have included would be the remote response clickers. It never fails that a teacher wants to use them and when she starts the lesson, something isn't working.

Thanks for the great website.

Most of our teachers have been forced to apply technology in their classrooms because our students currently have laptops at their disposal. If a teacher doesn't have an organized activity for the use of the laptops, then the students will find a non-appropriate activity to use them.
Our technology liaison on campus isn't always available so those of us who are pretty computer literate have to have an open door policy for the rest of the staff.
