Beaumont ISD - Week 10 Step 7 Tanya Anderson

1.       How do your proposed strategies (Week 8 Step 6) meet the required standards as your Week 6
           Step 4 stated?

In Week 8 Step, the strategies were broken down into Technology, funding and management.  Under each, you will find the needs assessment, with particulars to prove the need has been met. Assessments are used to determine the level of each staff. We use the STaR Chart as our districts self assessment (BISD, 2010). As with most districts, Funding remains to be the largest issue or problem.  Because of funding, the implementation of the goals may not be accomplished. The Long-Term Plan allows funding or necessary equipment to be moved down to the following year if it is not available the first year (TEA,2006).
The arrangement in comparison of the week 8 step 6 and week 6 step 4 will address the alignment of the strategies vs standards. My weekly blogs contain the formation of the objectives include the strategies suggested in Week 8, Step 6.

2.      Review the reading materials in Technology domain to propose using other standards which are not adopted by your studied school. Explain why those new standards should be considered for your studied school.

Several portion of technology are not utilized by our district that would be beneficial to improving student performance and knowledge district wide. After review of the  ISTE and NETS, I found the follow standards that are not part of our technology plan but should be:
·         Communication and Collaboration
Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media. They communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats. They develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures and contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems.
“Digital authoring tools for creating multimedia projects and online communities for sharing them with the world offer students outlets for social and emotional connections with educators, peers, communities, and the world at large” (ED.Gov, n.d)

·          Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
Participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning

Contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and  of their school and community.

These standards concur with the Long Range Plan for Technology (TEA, 2006) and should be included.  In order for our students to be engaged in meaningful technology infused activities as an effort to live up to the 21st century, These standards need to be added.

I see that your district uses the StAR chart as well. My district uses it but I feel that many teachers fill the same thing year after year. Do you see that most of your staff fill it out and truly think about the answers? Or do they just fill it out to be done with it? I think that it could be a benficial tool, if everyone would just use it effectively. Do you all fill it out at the beginning of the year or the end of the year?

I see the same thing here at our school. I feel that it is a good tool also if staff would take it seriously. We complete our STaR Chart at the beginning of the school year.

Do you have a way of having your students share their multimedia creations online? Posting students work to the district's website is a great way to get the kids to visit to the district's website plus the parents can see what they are learning to do in class.

We use the STaR at our school too. However, I think our teachers view it as another pain in the @$$ thing they HAVE to do. They drag their feet in getting it done and when they finally do get it done I don't think they really put much thought into the answers. But on the other hand, our technology director does not review the data that is gathered from it. So really the only point is to get the funding.
