Kimberly Crawford Week 10 Step 7

1. How do your proposed strategies (Week 8 Step 6) meet the required standards as your Week 6 Step 4 stated?

Proposed Strategies from Week 8 Step 6:

Sources of Reoccurring Technology Funding Include:

· Local and State Taxes

· School and Department General Operating Fund Budgets

· Capital outlay for equipment for new sites and wings

· Legislative fund set asides (Eisenhower, Title 1)

· Instructional textbook funds - utilized for educational software

· School District maintenance and repair contracts

Sources of these Non-Reoccurring technology funding include:

· Competitive grant and special fund opportunities - Particularly as they relate to distance learning, networking, training/staff development, and educational technology - (ie Challenge Literacy Grant)

· Business and Community Partnerships - Provide equipment and technical support and training. Examples of this include IBM, NASA, Pacific Bell, Microsoft. Since there has never been enough funding by federal and local governments, businesses have stepped up to the plate, to help in this area. This has been quite successful in many communities. In this case, the company often will either offer very deep discounts on products sold or donate the equipment to school systems.

· University, state and private agencies.

· Parent and Business Partner donations

The strategies that I proposed on Week 8 Step 6 were proposed after reviewing the weaknesses of my school. I also interviewed staff members, and reviewed the objectives in the past blogs. In Week6, Step 4, we had to develop objectives for the technology plan. Objective one stated: Improve academic performance opportunities and achievement across the curriculum through technology services.
Week 8 Step 6 proposed strategy: The staff members will have to go to special training in order to learn how to incorporate technology into the curriculum. The teachers will have some funding in order to go to technology workshops.
Competitive grant and special fund opportunities - Particularly as they relate to distance learning, networking, training/staff development, and educational technology - (ie Challenge Literacy Grant)
Objective two stated:100% of the computers will have the latest Spring ISD software, and every classroom will have two working computers
Week 8 Step 6 proposed strategy: The objective stated 100% of the computers this means all of the computers in the school. This will need to also have fundings, and help from Spring ISD. The funding to make sure that the computers that are not workings are replaced with working computers. Spring ISD to make sure that all the latest software is installed in all computers.

2. Review the reading materials in Technology domain to propose using other standards which are not adopted by your studied school. Explain why those new standards should be considered for your studied school.

My school is not in compliance with a lot of the technology domains.

Candidates:
1. provide teachers with options for management of technology resources within the context of
learning activitie

This standard should be considered in my school. This would mean that a person from the school district would have to come, and help teachers out with the ISTE standards. This is something t hat the school district has not done yet.

Apply technology to demonstrate students' higher-order skills and creativity. Candidates:
1. use methods and facilitate strategies for teaching problem-solving principles and skills using
technology resources

The new STAARS test this facilitator will come into play. The new test requires higher order thinking abilities. This would help the student out by applying technology into the mix. Technology makes things fun and exciting something that many teachers do not realize.

Kim,
A resource that can be used to support problem-solving principles and skills using technology could be the online web-based practice that is called Brainchild. The questions are excellent because they are broken up by student expectations so it is possible to have students practice exactly what they need to strengthen.

Kim,
Check into Brainchild to use for the students to prepare online for the new STAARs test. It breaks up the skills by student expectations. Teachers can monitor students progress by having the students take pre-tests, work through lessons to practice and then take a post test.

I see that making sure that all computers within the district have the latest software available is one of your objectives or goals. How is that currently handled within your district? Does the district have any type of schedule as far as replacing hardware and/or software? We update ours every 4 years and we have a contract with an outside company. Now with that being said, we still aren't always up-to-date. Sometimes our "new" things or "new" software really isn't the most current versions but instead refurbished used items. I do think it's important for a district to have some type of plan or vision to update material. How often do you think it should be updated? Do you think 4 years is a good amount of time, or is it too little or too much?
