Junior High- Lindsey Pippen Week 10

Week 10

1. How do your proposed strategies (Week 8 Step 6) meet the required standards as your Week 6 Step 4 stated?
Goal 1: Provide supporting resources - software, hardware, outsourced services and learning materials to ensure successful and effective uses of technology.
Goal 2: To improve the capacity of all teachers to effectively integrate technology into curriculum and instruction.
Goal 3: To ensure that all students, professional educators and support staff have increased access to technology.

Strategies
·         Needs Assessment given to teachers and administrators
·         Analyzing STaR Chart results
·         Online checkout of computer labs and iPads monitored by the technology director or campus facilitator by using Eduphoria
·         District technology director locating and securing grants
·         Apply for Erate discount
·         Attend Region 12 Trainings
·         Attend District trainings
·         Campus technology facilitator or principal assigns technology mentors to new and existing teachers
·         Campus principal analyzes the Needs Assessment
·         Campus facilitator makes sure teachers know and apply the ISTE Nets

The strategies are supported by the Long Range Technology Plan, Priority 5 Teach Competencies and Certifications, "All of the investments in hardware, software, online resources, networks, Internet, planning, and others will not produce the desired results in learning if teachers do not possess the knowledge and skills necessary to integrate technology into their daily educational planning and classroom instruction" (TEA, 2012).
The Long Range Technology Plan states, "Significant and “dedicated” funding is necessary to maintain what has already been accomplished in Texas and to (1) improve the student-to-computer ratio, (2) provide instructional support and professional development, and (3) ensure adequate technical support, so that Texas can move forward into the 21st Century" (TEA, 2012).
In addition to the Long Range Technology Plan, the proposed strategies meet ISTE standard 3- Model Digital Age Work and Learning, which states, “Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society” (ISTE, 2011). The teachers will learn these skills when they attend training at the Region 12 service center, mentors teach their mentees, and attend district trainings.
Another ISTE standard, the strategies meet is, Standard 5-Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership Teachers. This standard states, “continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources” (ISTE, 2011). Reviewing STaR chart results, analyzing needs assessments, and attending trainings are supported by this standard. The STaR chart allows teachers to analyze how they feel toward using technology in the classroom.

2. Review the reading materials in Technology domain to propose using other standards which are not adopted by your studied school. Explain why those new standards should be considered for your studied school.
My school needs to become aware of the Technology Facilitator Standards and the ISTE nets. The district I work in has never mentioned any of these standards in trainings or throughout the year. We are so focused on covering the required TEKS that everything else gets pushed aside. The technology standards, in my opinion, are important like the TEKS, but they aren’t tested, so they are often overlooked (ISTE, 2011).

Lindsey,
Your not alone, my district was unaware of the ISTE NETS as well until I brought the subject up during a meeting over the technology plan. Research states, "The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE, 2006) provided recommendations for teacher education programs in preparing preservice teachers to use technology effectively in kindergarten through high school classrooms. In addition, the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE, 2000) has developed two sets of technology standards, one for teachers and one for students. The ISTE National Education Technology Standards (NETS) for teachers focuses on understanding and integrating technology into the curriculum to maximize student learning. The ISTE NETS for students emphasizes that students’ use technology safely and ethically to communicate and interact with others, to research topics and issues, to produce products that enhance learning, and to help them make informed decisions and solve real-life problems"(Mosenson & Johnson, 2008)

According to Whitfield’s article, the job of the technology facilitator is to be the link for teachers between textbooks and technology (2005). Do you think that you as the facilitator would face resistance when trying to meet the ISTE standards?

I'm glad to know we aren't the only school district that wasn't aware. We seem to be in the dark ages on things and it gets really frustrating.

Great post! It amazing that regardless of the size of the school or district we all have been discovering the same problem: Not using the NETS.

I recently discovered this great professional development course offered by PBS Teacherline which provides professional development for teachers K-12. The course is not free but I'm sure with some grant money is very attainable. The course introduces the NETS to teachers and helps them in creating lesson with the NETS in mind. In the end the teachers walk away with a Portfolio of material and the capability to share their new knowledge with their peers. Here is the link if your interested: http://www.pbs.org/teacherline/catalog/courses/TECH401/

Tanya,

I do think as a technology facilitator I would meet resistance. Even though the district wants more technology use in the classrooms, I think it would be met with resistance from teachers because they do not want to incorporate anything else because they have to get the students ready for STAAR and it would take time to learn how to use and incorporate the technology into the class. I think I would also meet resistance from the curriculum department because they do not want teachers missing classtime to attend trainings.

Kristina,

Thanks so much for that resource. I wish I could get my campus to be as excited about technology as I am. Maybe since the training is online, many more would want to participate and find ways to come up with the funding.
