Week 10 Step 7 - Searight

Week 10 Step 7 - Design the Formative Evaluation of Technology Plan

1.   How do your proposed strategies (Week 8 Step 6) meet the required standards as your Week 6 Step 4 stated?

I developed my strategies to make sure they aligned with the mission, vision, core values, and goals of the MCC Strategic Plan.  I work directly for the Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning at MCC - who oversees the strategic planning process.   He and I work closely to develop institutional and departmental strategic plans that are closely aligned with the overall Strategic Plan.  The planning process is an ongoing effort that’s communicated and administered throughout all of our instructional and administrative processes.  Projects and process are also closely aligned with the MCC Strategic Plan and departmental strategic plans (goals, objectives, and strategies).

A Roadmap for Opportunity/Growth, Excellence
and Community Enrichment

Vision Statement
McLennan Community College’s rich tradition of excellence and innovation reflects its commitment to national leadership in:

·        Student learning and success through faculty excellence, innovative instructional methodologies, and classroom technology
·        Access to educational opportunities at the 2-year level and beyond via strategic enrollment management and partnerships with 4-year institutions
·        Efficient and responsible use of resources through a commitment to ethical oversight, sustainability, and environmental stewardship
·        Data-driven decision making via the utilization of valid and reliable data
·        Community enrichment through partnerships, program development, community service, and continuing education opportunities

Mission Statement
McLennan Community College provides access to excellent workforce and transfer programs, student services, and continuing education that promotes student success including proficiency in identified student learning outcomes, successful course completion, graduation, employment, and transfer to a senior institution. The college engages and strengthens its community through successful educational attainment, strong leadership, sustainability efforts, best practices, community service, and integrity.

Core Values
All choices, decisions and actions of McLennan Community College and the individuals associated with it arise from and are consistent with the following core values.

·        Excellence requires a commitment to allocating the time, effort, and resources to ensure superior achievement.
·        Integrity is exhibited through principled leadership that continues to earn the public’s trust and to achieve the highest levels of honesty and ethical behavior.
·        Innovation is to promote and affirm the spirit of invention and creativity.
·        Inclusion assures opportunity for accessible education to diverse learners by addressing financial, environmental, social, and academic barriers.
·        Stewardship, Sustainability, and Accountability requires an efficient and effective use of human, physical, and financial assets. Allocation of these resources is based on the commitment to the efficient and effective use of the environment.
·        Collaboration is essential in partnering to develop educational, technical, industrial, and cultural support to improve the quality of life in the community.

MCC Strategic Plan Goals

I.   Promote student educational opportunities and meet community needs through enrollment growth and retention while maintaining excellent programs and services
II.  Promote academic excellence and a culture of
     integrity.
III. Expand University Center initiative to increase access to educational opportunities.
IV.  Promote excellence and integrity among all faculty, administrators, professionals and support staff.
V.   Enhance and sustain resources to support the college's mission.
VI.  Enrich community life through artistic and cultural activities, entertainment offerings, athletic events, community service, and other opportunities.
VII. Build and sustain partnerships with health and social entities, cultural institutions, businesses, industries, and other institutions of learning to enhance access to educational opportunities.

2.   Review the reading materials in Technology domain to propose using other standards which are not adopted by your studied school.  Explain why those new standards should be considered for your studied school.

At MCC our Professional Development Department should be enhanced to deliver a more comprehensive instructional and administrative focused training plan.  It’s also my opinion that “professional development” should be mandatory and closely aligned with employee evaluations and compensation.  I would also make sure that the Professional Development Department consists of tech savvy employees that can deliver online and video streaming offerings to the campus user community.  Let’s face it - we live in a world where technology drives every aspect of our professional lives.  Institutions should make sure they are focused on recruiting, retaining, and developing our technology leaders of the future.

     “It’s all about people.”

Mike,

I really like your last statemenr "Institutions should make sure they are focused on recruiting, retaining, and developing our technology leaders of the future." What requirements do you feel are necessary to ensure this? ~Carol

I. too, like your last statement about developing technology leaders of the future. I really find myself after 23 years of teaching questioning whether we are doing that at the high school level. Are we truly preparing our students for a successful future? I have enjoyed working on this degree and the different research and assignments to push myself to be a better educator. I am glad to see our colleges preparing our students for a future that will definitely include technology. Now if we can just get our elementary, middle and high schools moving in the right direction. Do you have any suggestions or ideas for us high school educators? What are some areas that perhaps we are overlooking in our preparation?

Carol,

I think it's always about "leadership" within the instructional and the administrative ranks. Leaders that can create an environment that's rewarding (personally and professionally) and challenging, should retain their best employees. I think it can also go without saying that compensating employees for their hard work helps as well. Compensating and motivating employees within educational institutions will continue to be a major challenge --- unless you're Mack Brown at the University of Texas!!!

Joy,

At MCC we very focused on our quality enhancement plan that we submitted to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This plan is geared towards improving the "emotional intelligence" of our students, faculty and staff.

MCC LEAP Project:

We so too often find that our students are not prepared to deal with College life and the emotional journey that they're about to embark on. We are building this LEAP project based on the book listed
below.

Emotional Intelligence, 2nd Edition
Achieving Academic and Career Excellence
Darwin B. Nelson
Cary Low

We are very excited about this endeavor and we hope that it will change the culture of our institution.

Mike
